Segismundo, príncipe de Polonia, vive encerrado en un castillo en compañía de su sirviente Clotaldo. Está preso por orden de su padre, el rey Basilio, quien quería, de esta manera, evitar que se cumplieran los pronósticos: el rey sería humillado y ofendido por el hijo. Basilio, para probar a Segismundo, le narcotiza y le conduce a palacio. Segismundo demuestra sus instintos feroces y sus pasiones desatadas atropellando a la joven Rosaura, la primera mujer que ha conocido. Basilio se convence de lo cruel y despótico que sería un hombre como su hijo, si ascendiese al trono. Por lo cual nuevamente es narcotizado y llevado a la torre. Segismundo cree que todo ha sido un sueño. El pueblo se subleva a favor de Segismundo, éste vence a su padre cumpliéndose los vaticinios. Segismundo se porta generosamente con su padre, cambia de carácter y refrena la pasión concebida hacia Rosaura, dejando que ésta se despose con su prometido.

Sigismund, prince of Poland, lives in a castle with his servant Clotald. He is imprisoned by order of his father, King Basil, who wanted, in this way, to prevent the predictions from being fulfilled: the king would be humiliated and offended by the son. Basil, to test Sigismund, drug him and leads him to the palace. Sigismund demonstrates his ferocious instincts and his unbridled passions by running over young Rosaura, the first woman he has ever met. Basil is convinced of how cruel and despotic a man like his son would be if he ascended the throne. So again he is drugged and taken to the tower. Sigismund believes that everything has been a dream. The people revolted in favor of Sigismund, who defeated his father, fulfilling the predictions. Sigismund behaves generously with his father, changes character and curbs the passion conceived towards Rosaura, leaving her to marry her fiancé.
